In general, AirPods connected to an iPhone or iPad should automatically update to the latest firmware after a short period, and it may help to keep the AirPods in their charging case and connected to a power source. Those updates include iOS and iPadOS 16.7.2 and 15.8, macOS Ventura 13.6.1, macOS Monterey 12.7.1, and the Safari 17.1 update for both of those macOS versions. Beyond visiting an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider, there is no direct way for customers to update the firmware on their AirPods. Apple today seeded the third beta of the upcoming macOS 14 Sonoma update to developers for testing purposes. The firmware updater tool is for Apple's internal use only. Furthermore, the public beta isn’t going to be available until July 2023. The tool allows technicians with access to Apple Service Toolkit 2 to install the latest firmware on a customer's AirPods in certain scenarios, such as if the customer's left or right AirPod failed to update or the customer is using a non-iOS companion device. The official version of macOS Sonoma isn’t going to be publicly available until Fall 2023. Both the AirPods Pro and second-generation AirPods are now listed as supported models, but not the third-generation AirPods or the AirPods Max. In an internal memo today, obtained by MacRumors, Apple announced that the tool is now capable of updating the firmware on second-generation AirPods as well. Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and all releases from OS X 10.8. After you have downloaded the InstallAssistant.pkg file, launch it and go through the simple steps on screen to extract the complete and full Install macOS Sonoma.app installer application into the /Applications folder on the Mac. In late 2021, Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers gained access to a new "AirPods Firmware Updater" diagnostic tool for updating a customer's AirPods Pro to the latest firmware version when necessary. The first desktop version, Mac OS X 10.0, was released on March 24, 2001.
